About the Role
Position Overview We are looking for a hands-on Experimental Systems Engineer to take ownership of our experimental fusion prototypes, laboratory infrastructure, and supporting systems. The role combines experimental operations, multidisciplinary system integration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and continuous improvement. You will be responsible for ensuring that the experimental platform is operational, reliable, and ready to support the company's R&D activities.
Key Responsibilities
Take ownership of the day-to-day operation, readiness, maintenance, and reliability of experimental fusion prototypes and supporting laboratory infrastructure.
Plan, prepare, and conduct experimental campaigns in close collaboration with the physics and engineering teams.
Operate and monitor multidisciplinary systems, including pulsed-power generators, magnetic systems, vacuum systems, cooling systems, RF/microwave equipment, diagnostics, and control systems.
Configure experimental setups, integrate new hardware, and support prototype upgrades and commissioning.
Operate data acquisition and control systems, collect experimental measurements, and ensure data quality, traceability, and proper documentation.
Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, electronic, and control-system malfunctions, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
Develop and maintain experimental procedures, operating protocols, maintenance plans, and safety procedures.
Improve experimental reliability, repeatability, operational efficiency, and system availability.
Coordinate laboratory activities, equipment maintenance, spare parts, suppliers, and technical support.
Work hands-on with engineers and technicians on system assembly, wiring, integration, testing, and repairs.
Requirements
Required Qualifications and Skills
B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related engineering field (M.Sc. an advantage).
4+ years of experience working with multidisciplinary experimental systems, laboratory equipment, or complex R&D prototypes.
Strong hands-on technical capabilities, including system assembly, integration, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Good understanding of electrical, mechanical, and electronic systems, with the ability to diagnose problems across multiple engineering disciplines.
Experience with laboratory instrumentation, including oscilloscopes, power supplies, signal generators, sensors, and data acquisition systems.
Strong organizational skills, technical ownership, and ability to manage multiple activities and priorities.
Advantages
Experience with high-voltage, high-current, or pulsed-power systems.
Experience with vacuum systems, cooling systems, magnetic systems, or RF/microwave equipment.
Experience with automation, control systems, PLCs, and laboratory software such as LabVIEW or Python.
Experience coordinating experimental campaigns, laboratory operations, or multidisciplinary technical projects.
Who We Are Looking For
We are looking for a resourceful, independent, and highly hands-on engineer who enjoys working with complex experimental systems and solving practical engineering challenges.
The ideal candidate takes ownership, understands how different subsystems interact, and is comfortable moving between experimental operations, troubleshooting, hardware integration, and coordination with the R&D team.
